Ride the Future: Fully Driverless Robotaxis Go Live in Abu Dhabi

Fully driverless robotaxis can now be hailed in Abu Dhabi, marking a new chapter in the city’s transport innovation. The fully driverless robotaxis service, operated through a collaboration between WeRide and Uber, has received official approval to run without safety operators on board.

Permit Approval for Driverless Operation

Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre granted a city-level permit enabling fully autonomous robotaxi operations. This removes the requirement for a human safety driver inside the vehicle, allowing the taxis to independently manage driving tasks within designated zones. The service operates at Level 4 autonomy, meaning the vehicles can fully drive themselves under specified conditions without human intervention.

Service Coverage and Expansion Plans

The robotaxi service currently operates in major areas such as Yas Island, Al Reem, and Al Maryah Island. The fleet has tripled in size since its initial launch in December 2024 and uses WeRide’s advanced GXR model designed for commercial autonomous driving, accommodating up to five passengers per vehicle. The companies aim to extend their service to Khalifa City, Masdar City, and other key districts by the end of 2025, with plans to grow the fleet to several hundred vehicles.

Booking and Accessibility

Passengers can book the fully driverless robotaxis using the Uber app under a special autonomous vehicle category. The fleet is fully electric, offering an environmentally friendly transport option that supports Abu Dhabi’s sustainability goals. The service aims to reduce traffic congestion while providing safe, reliable, and affordable urban mobility. It also opens new opportunities for residents without private vehicles, including the elderly and differently-abled.

Strategic Impact on Urban Mobility

This launch demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s commitment to adopting smart and sustainable transport technologies. The deployment of driverless robotaxis strengthens the city’s position as a leader in autonomous vehicle innovations in the Middle East. The partnership maintains a strong focus on passenger and pedestrian safety, with WeRide boasting over 1,800 days of public autonomous driving experience, setting high safety performance standards.

In conclusion, the ability to hail fully driverless robotaxis in Abu Dhabi through Uber and WeRide represents a significant advancement in urban transport. It offers residents new mobility solutions while pushing the city toward a smarter, cleaner future.
