SDAIA Starts Building World’s Largest Government Data Centre

Saudi data centre project launches with groundbreaking for the 480MW Hexagon facility in Riyadh. SDAIA drives this effort to strengthen the kingdom’s position in the global data and AI sectors. The initiative aligns directly with national priorities for digital transformation.

Project Essentials

The Saudi data centre covers more than 2.8 million square meters, equivalent to about 30 million square feet. Construction teams target the prestigious Tier IV certification from the Uptime Institute, guaranteeing maximum uptime and resilience. Dual independent utility paths for power and cooling protect against disruptions, ensuring seamless service for critical e-government applications and emerging AI workloads.

SDAIA emphasizes data sovereignty, keeping sensitive information secure within Saudi borders. The Riyadh location provides optimal connectivity to fiber optic networks and urban infrastructure, facilitating low-latency operations.

Launch Ceremony

SDAIA President Abdullah bin Sharaf Alghamdi presided over the official groundbreaking. In his remarks, he connected the project to Saudi Vision 2030, underscoring its role in fostering a knowledge-based economy. Attendees included government officials and industry partners, highlighting collaborative momentum.

Capacity and Standards

Engineers design the Saudi data centre for a full 480 megawatts of IT load capacity. Compliance with TIA-942 Rated-4 standards incorporates advanced fault-tolerant features. Modular construction allows scalable expansion as demand rises from cloud computing and big data analytics.

Cooling systems employ energy-efficient technologies suited to Riyadh’s climate. Security protocols meet international benchmarks, safeguarding against cyber threats.

Strategic Vision

This project forms part of SDAIA’s ambitious roadmap, including a potential $100 billion national AI entity. Saudi Arabia accelerates data centre development to host hyperscale operations and attract foreign direct investment. Hexagon will serve as a flagship, demonstrating technical prowess and operational excellence.

The build creates thousands of jobs in engineering, procurement, and operations. Local content requirements boost Saudi firms in the supply chain, from cabling to HVAC systems.

Regional Expansion

SDAIA outlines plans for multiple additional Saudi data centres across the kingdom. These facilities will interconnect into a robust national network, supporting edge computing and 5G integration. Riyadh’s emergence as a Middle East data nexus draws comparisons to established hubs like Dubai and draws telecom giants.

Phased rollout prioritizes core infrastructure completion within 24-36 months, followed by fit-out and commissioning.

Economic Impact

The Saudi data centre bolsters non-oil GDP growth by enabling digital services for 35 million residents. It powers smart city initiatives, healthcare digitization, and financial tech platforms. Exportable expertise positions Saudi as an exporter of data centre technology.

Sustainability measures include renewable energy tie-ins and water recycling, aligning with green goals. Long-term, Hexagon reduces latency for regional users, enhancing competitiveness against international clouds.

Global Benchmark

At 480MW, this Saudi data centre challenges records as the largest government-owned facility worldwide. It outpaces many private hyperscalers in scale and redundancy. Saudi Arabia’s aggressive pipeline signals a shift toward data self-sufficiency amid global shortages.

Investors watch closely as the kingdom leverages oil wealth for tech diversification. Completion will mark a milestone in Vision 2030 execution.
