Roots in a Changing City
Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh was born in 1962 in Abu Dhabi, a city that was just beginning to find its modern identity. The streets were simpler then, shaped by trade and the first waves of the oil economy. Growing up in this environment gave him an early sense of how ambition, discipline, and vision could build something lasting.
Education That Opened New Doors
After finishing his early schooling in Abu Dhabi, Ahmed left for the United States in the early 1980s. He enrolled at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon, where he earned a degree in economics in 1983. The years abroad were more than a classroom experience; they exposed him to new ideas about growth, governance, and how nations build strong economic foundations.
First Steps in Energy
On returning home, Ahmed began working with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. The energy sector was at the heart of the UAE’s transformation, and these years helped him understand how strategic investment fuels national progress. The lessons he learned there would shape much of what came next in his career.
A Role in Building a Global Airline
In 2003, he became one of the founding board members of Etihad Airways. The airline started with a handful of routes and grew into a global carrier that helped put Abu Dhabi on the international map. His role reflected a wider vision creating networks that connect people, trade, and opportunity.
Creating Aldar Properties
A year later, in 2004, Ahmed Ali AI Sayegh stepped forward to help launch Aldar Properties as its founding chairman. The company officially began operations in 2005 with a clear goal: to shape the capital’s urban future. Under his guidance, Aldar set out to build more than just towers. It focused on creating places where people could live, work, and build communities.
Transforming Land Into a Modern Capital
The company grew quickly, developing projects that turned large, undeveloped plots into busy neighborhoods, business districts, and entertainment spaces. These developments helped give Abu Dhabi a modern face while preserving its local character. Ahmed’s leadership at Aldar continued until 2011, but his influence remains visible across the city’s skyline.
Leading the Clean Energy Push
His work was not limited to real estate. In 2006, he became the founding chairman of Masdar, a major clean energy initiative. At a time when renewable energy was still taking shape globally, Masdar signaled the UAE’s commitment to a sustainable future. It focused on solar power, research, and sustainable city planning fields that have grown more important with each passing year.
Strengthening Regional Energy
Ahmed Ali AI Sayegh also served as Managing Director of Dolphin Energy. The company plays a key role in delivering natural gas from Qatar to the UAE and Oman, providing reliable energy to industries and homes. His leadership helped align this project with the country’s wider economic strategy.
Serving the UAE
In 2018, he was appointed Minister of State. In this capacity, he worked at the intersection of business, government, and global partnerships. His leadership extended to Abu Dhabi Global Market, where, as chairman, he helped position the capital as an international financial center that attracts investment and talent.
Recognition and Influence
Ahmed’s work has received recognition at home and abroad. In 2019, The London Institute of Banking & Finance awarded him an honorary Master’s degree. He was also honored by ABANA (Arab Bankers Association of North America) for his role in strengthening UAE–US economic relations.
A Lasting Contribution
Today, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh’s story is closely tied to the rise of modern Abu Dhabi. His role in aviation, real estate, clean energy, and finance has shaped both the skyline and the foundations beneath it. He represents a generation of Emirati leaders who built steadily, with long-term vision rather than quick gains.
His legacy can be seen not just in buildings, but in the institutions and partnerships that continue to push the UAE forward.
