Eni makes major gas discovery in Egypt, marking a significant boost to the country’s natural gas reserves. The Italian energy company confirmed that the Denise W‑1 exploration well in the Temsah Concession, about 70 kilometres offshore, holds an estimated 2 trillion cubic feet of gas and 130,000 barrels of condensate.
Strategic Location and Fast-Track Potential
The well was drilled in the Eastern Mediterranean at a water depth of 95 metres and is located less than 10 km from existing gas infrastructure. This proximity is expected to allow fast-track development and efficient integration with current facilities, according to Eni.
The newly discovered reservoir features a gas-bearing sandstone of excellent quality with roughly 50 metres of productive rock. Eni noted that the find is similar to the nearby Temsah field, which has been producing gas since 2001.
Partnership and Operational Details
Eni operates the Denise Development Lease with a 50% working interest, while BP holds the remaining 50%, under the joint venture company Petrobel. The discovery follows a 20-year renewal of the Temsah concession signed in July 2025 with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS).
Supporting Egypt’s Energy Goals
Eni stated that the discovery reinforces its commitment to supporting Egypt’s energy security by boosting reserves and gas production. The company highlighted that its near-field, infrastructure-led exploration strategy has contributed to rejuvenating producing assets in the region.
Context of Egypt’s Gas Sector
Egypt continues to attract investment in gas production, leveraging its existing infrastructure, including two LNG export terminals, to potentially capitalise on global supply disruptions. While the country remains a net importer, the new discovery strengthens its domestic supply and future export potential.
Eni makes major gas discovery in Egypt reflects the ongoing focus on expanding energy production and reinforces Egypt’s strategic position in the regional gas market.
