Dubai – In a strategic move to advance its AI initiatives, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has named Dr. Marwan Alzarouni as its Chief Executive Officer of AI. This appointment marks a significant step in Dubai’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge AI technologies into its governance structure, aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

The initiative follows a directive from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, who recently mandated the appointment of 22 chief AI officers across various government entities in the city.

Dr. Alzarouni expressed his vision for Dubai’s AI future, emphasizing its potential impact on everyday life: “Our AI initiatives are dedicated to prioritizing the well-being and experiences of Dubai’s residents and visitors. By harnessing advanced technologies, we aim to create a smarter, more sustainable, and enjoyable urban environment.”

The appointment of Dr. Alzarouni is part of Dubai’s broader strategy outlined in its ‘Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence’. This blueprint aims to integrate AI technologies comprehensively within the fabric of Dubai’s governance, enhancing government performance and advancing innovation in sectors critical to the city’s growth.

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the significance of these appointments, stating, “This initiative will bolster Dubai’s expertise and leadership in the AI sector, fostering innovative solutions built on advanced technology.”

Under the oversight of the Dubai Future Foundation’s Dubai Center for Artificial Intelligence, candidates for these pivotal roles were rigorously evaluated and selected. The initiative includes launching AI and Web3 incubators, facilitating expedited land allocation for data centers, and introducing specialized commercial licenses for AI-focused businesses.

Furthermore, educational institutions in Dubai will host an AI Week to cultivate a culture of innovation and technological advancement among students and professionals alike.

Dr. Alzarouni’s appointment sets a precedent for other government entities in Dubai, with plans underway to appoint chief AI officers across key departments including the Community Development Authority, Dubai Government Human Resources Department, Dubai Customs, Dubai Police, The Judicial Council, and Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, among others.

Dubai’s aggressive AI strategy underscores its commitment to leading the way in adopting transformative technologies that promise to redefine urban living and governance in the 21st century.
